The Big in the Small Studio
	04.21.23
&nbsp;&nbsp;Per the design brief, six fully public, universal washrooms are to be built in an alley. The alley, located on Granville Street and tucked between Arthur Erickson’s Dance Centre and a typical Vancouver “I” building, is 7.5m wide and 40m long.The contradiction between the free-flowing nature of dance, the materials associated with it and the standard, strictly formed concrete in the Dance Centre inspired a study into fabric formed concrete. Textiles are the first material an infant comes into contact with as they are wrapped in a blanket, and humans are almost always clothed or touching some form of fabric. This project attempts to translate the great sense of comfort derived from textiles into the program of a public washroom, in order to humanize a vulnerable place where the feeling is often distinctly inhuman due to an over-adherence to code and material choices.&nbsp;

	1:50 Worm’s eye view model - A cut along the ground plane shows the inverse of the plan and the interior condition of the fabric formed cones that hold the washrooms. The plan is etched into a layer of clear acrylic.

The approach to site design came from imagining a Christo and Jean-Claude-esque installation that totally wraps the alley in a sheet of fabric. Then, in a dance between cast and resulting form, the parts of the fabric sheet are pulled up to create cavities that hold each washroom. As the casts are removed and the fabric is peeled away, the insides of the washrooms reveal a new condition that echos the presence of fabric but maintains the structural integrity and lighting conditions of concrete.

The organization of washrooms appear loose and sporadic, though inside, each fixture (toilet, sink, table and door) is aligned with the fixture of another washroom. At any point, a washroom user may (or may not) be in alignment with another, unknown user. This alludes to the presence of a mirrored partner in a dance, though the view is only available to the architect, affording the user privacy but giving clue to an overarching choreography. Just as the casts are missing but the resulting forms remain, mystery shrouds the presence of another character within the site choreography.

Reviewers were invited to place their hands in the sink and look upward in order to experience the interior of the washroom at a 1:1 scale. The cone-top is strung from the ceiling using the same cables used to pull the fabric during the casting process.

	Form-Finding Blackout Drawings

Process - Drawings

As a form-finding study, four drawings inspired by Mark West’s “Blackout drawings” technique were completed early on in the design process. This process involved collaging three images at equally low opacities, then using graphite shading to tease out hidden geometries that result from the overlap. This process takes the pressure of drawing off of the artists shoulders; no actual lines are drawn on the paper. It also allows for a controlled curation of precedents. These drawings are the result of the combination of an Isamu Noguchi sculpture, a pose from Martha Graham’s “Lamentation” dance, and various fabric art installations. This process was then repeated for the architectural hand-drawings, though the sculptural element was replaced with the orthographic sections.
Process - Models
The 1:1 Model of the top of the cone, was the most accurate reprentation of how these structures could be constructed. The process involved pouring a flat sheet of Rockite on fabric, leaving it until it is about 50% hardened, then slowly raising a point of the fabric by a pulley system attached to the ceiling. As the surface area of the fabric increases by stretching upwards, patching is required to fill in little gaps where the surface had stretched. A portion of wire fencing is used as rebar, formed by stretching the fabric before pouring and then mirroring the path it will take by hand-bending the wires.&nbsp;

	Casting System

Rockite, a fine powder used commonly as a patching cement, was chosen for its’ lack of aggregate, allowing the mix to most accurately capture the patterns and imperfections in the texture of fabric.
The 1:50 Worm’s eye view model is constructed in a similar way, though due to scale and available materials, the pulley system could not be translated. Instead, the points are pre-pulled and poured upon, using a drier mix that could be pasted by hand. While the points of fabric are pulled up, they are also pulled back down to the ground plane by upholstery tacks to create the cavities.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;
The integration of Artificial Intelligence into current architectural practice is ignorant to the fact that drawing and making is how architects and designers work to solutions. Image, text, and orthographic AI generation accelerates work to completion, shifting designer into curator.
To preserve the generative act of ‘making’ (a correspondance between material and human) we must integrate human sensitivity, and embodied intelligence into Artificial Intelligence processes rather than surrendering the generative work. Making is thinking.

Traditional ‘Making’ Process

An affordable desktop robot, equipped with various sensors and given the ability to record and learn, enters the correspondance, mimicking not only what the maker does, but how. The body of knowledge carries not only in the maker’s mind, but in an evolving digital knowledge-base of movements.

	AI Incorporated ‘Making’ Process

<img width="3300" height="1800" width_o="3300" height_o="1800" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/98d4f1a6ff192081455610037c65b13bbf0582f4ca09f21b2528e0f9ab3af191/making-w-ai-process.jpg" data-mid="244256047" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/98d4f1a6ff192081455610037c65b13bbf0582f4ca09f21b2528e0f9ab3af191/making-w-ai-process.jpg" />
<img width="2550" height="1650" width_o="2550" height_o="1650" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e53a651e193e55c0ea9c6f59c691969b6c02f2d65fad461e81f1ae1f0c1c23d4/robot-drawing-three-reduced.png" data-mid="244256045" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e53a651e193e55c0ea9c6f59c691969b6c02f2d65fad461e81f1ae1f0c1c23d4/robot-drawing-three-reduced.png" />

Handmaking tiles, as a mostly linear process, can incorporate a co-making robot at a few key steps. A human imprints a pattern, then the RO-ARM M2 desktop robot responds, creating a correspondance between three intelligences (human, material, and artificial). The AI generates a responsive pattern in response to prompting and sensor input. As it executes, verbal feedback can be translated via voice-to-text and interpreted by the AI to qualify each action, allowing a makeshift reinforcement learning system to evaluate outcomes and create a dataset of successful material strategies.

A set of tiles becomes an evolving data sculpture, each tile representing path execution and datapoint, materializing a dataset that would otherwise be invisible. The use of artificial intellgence has tangible and traceable effects on the physical world.

Tile Data Sculpture and DetailBeyond a two-dimensional process, three-dimensional movements can be recorded in space and learned. By incorporating a depth camera that tracks joints and fingertips, human movements are captured in real time, replayed, and entered into a dataset that trains new movements while retaining the intricacies embedded in the original actions. A makeshift reinforement learning algorithm is created. 10 movements are recorded, only the succesful are stored, and an AI is asked in natural language to reproduce a similar movement pattern based on the successful dataset.&nbsp;

This is tested at the architectural model scale through co-making a fabric-cast plaster wall, where the human maker and robot alternate in placing units. The soft units accomodate the lack of wrist and finger axis, and allow for each unit to conform to the form of the previous piece.&nbsp;

Artificial intelligence is especially effective at translating logic. By learning and collaborating with human movement, it can also mediate natural processes of construction, such as insect carving, erosion, growth, and material flow. Through AI, human makers, machines, and environmental forces can co-make, embedding previously unexplored embodied intelligences drawn from a range of bio-intelligent systems.

How many forms of embodied thinking have been lost to time? What underexplored methods of making could be influencing our built environment today, but are absent because they emerged at the wrong moment? By building an artificial intelligence knowledge base grounded in movement and material sensitivity, there is potential to preserve and transmit knowledge of making that transcends current methods of language and choreography.

Note: Use of Artificial Intelligence is strictly limited to coding assistance, voice-to-text translation into grasshopper, and movement path proposals based off human motion recordings. No drawing, diagram or text are AI generated. The intention is that AI should be solely focused on helping create an environment where human intuition is the creative driver.&nbsp;

	The Big in the Small Studio
	02.25.23
&nbsp;&nbsp;
A light sculpture materializing the idea that “Terrain Vague”, or urban non-places should not be designed away, but embraced. Just as in nature, where tropical rainforests exist simultaneously with sheer rock faces, spaces where nothing happens occur naturally in cities, alongside busy plazas and sidewalks. The sculpture aims to reframe the presence of voids as natural and intentional.&nbsp;
Built in response to a site visit to an alley of Granville Street, Vancouver. The majority of Downtown Vancouver nightlife occurs on this street and during the day there is considerable foot traffic. Despite a lack of existing program, the alley is not necessarily underused. Dog walking, smoking, and infinite uncategorizeable activities still occur regularly.

<img width="2100" height="2944" width_o="2100" height_o="2944" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b01424d2846fe103afd4336084cea7e7f1c4ef5b12fc00b9c87966d9ab99a946/IMG_2246.jpg" data-mid="169489679" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b01424d2846fe103afd4336084cea7e7f1c4ef5b12fc00b9c87966d9ab99a946/IMG_2246.jpg" />

The sculpture is a first step towards a light that would be implemented as a small art piece and unobstrusive lighting feature in the alley, not changing the use of the space but increasing visibility for those who pass through.

Before and After Melting

An incandescent lightbulb and lamp socket are cast into a block of paraffin wax. Once dry, the block is carved and punctured numerous times. Cement and Plaster of Paris are then mixed to similar consistencies and poured at the same time, filling the cracks and holes in the wax to create a web of half-cement, half-plaster tendrils. The incandescent bulb, emitting heat over 60 degrees celcius while lit, melts the paraffin wax (melting point of around 40 degrees celcius), leaving a cavity between the two materials.

From loosely wired connection to stained-glass joinery, the ‘Alchemist’ (re)fuses difficult-to-recycle fragments of glass intro fragile objects, like a fortune teller weaves moments of the past and future to tell convincing but imperfect narratives.

Built in response to professor Bill Pechet’s prompt: “Design a process and a shelter that attaches to a bike out of a recycled material.”

<img width="3496" height="3024" width_o="3496" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/27a2a8160171a45a467b9deaae69fe4c4f4153399f939a40938087636e6a1858/IMG_0250.jpg" data-mid="168920039" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/27a2a8160171a45a467b9deaae69fe4c4f4153399f939a40938087636e6a1858/IMG_0250.jpg" />

An organic form of shelter over the bike grows and shrinks as the fortune teller collects
and uses the shards of glass.

Process
For the 1:1 scale fused object, a dismantled broken glass bottle is fitted together and fused in a process similar to stained glass joinery.
The 1:1 single wire connection of one broken glass piece is acheived by bending a bronze rod around a pipe the same thickness of the bottleneck.&nbsp;
The 1:10 bike model is made of copper sheet metal strips bent, soldered, and filed into place. Glass shards are strung up by copper wire.

This project attempts to resist build-and-demolish culture by creating a new middle-density of housing through renovations of the most common type of home in
the city: the Vancouver Special. The renovation multiplies the ecceltic collection of architectural elements found on existing Special facades, while harbouring a
clean, organized interior.

	ProcessMultiple white acrylic sheets are laser cut to the dimensions of a Rhino file to create the layers of the facade, then are layered and glued on the face of matching hemlock pieces.
Rockite base is cast with dowels centered midway into the mould. Once dry, mould is removed and Acrylic and hemlock pieces are fit and glued into dowels to complete model.&nbsp;

A set of ambiguous landscape elements dispersed throughout a minimally terraformed
meadow, planted over a contaminated brownsite on the Courtenay River, situated on the east shore of Vancouver Island. The metal structures do not actively facilitate human interaction, but their intrigue attracts those willing to traverse through the
thick brush. Minimal human interaction allows the early meadow plantings to grow and heal the site.

Plans and models are left intentionally ambiguous, allowing the site and landscape elements to exist in mystery. I

n modern times, the accessibility of mapping softwares has eroded our navigational memory.

Those curious enough to visit the site are challenged to reconnect to innate wayfinding skills.
