Super Special

Urban Systems Studio

11.19.22

This project attempts to resist build-and-demolish culture by creating a new middle-density of housing through renovations of the most common type of home in the city: the Vancouver Special. The renovation multiplies the ecceltic collection of architectural elements found on existing Special facades, while harbouring a clean, organized interior.

This renovation updates the two pre-existing floors, and adds two one-floor units and one two-floor loft unit above.

Process

Multiple white acrylic sheets are laser cut to the dimensions of a Rhino file to create the layers of the facade, then are layered and glued on the face of matching hemlock pieces.

Rockite base is cast with dowels centered midway into the mould. Once dry, mould is removed and Acrylic and hemlock pieces are fit and glued into dowels to complete model.
