Saint’s Path

Design Theory

09.12.21

An analytical model capturing the disorienting, Ganzfeld-like experience of travelling through Diller, Scofidio + Renfro’s Blur Building exhibition (2002).

Before entering the exhibition structure, users were given a survey with a series of questions that would inform their experience. One question, “Saint or Sinner?” determined whether the user’s path would lead through the mist to the ‘Angel Deck’ above, or deeper into the cloud. The model conceptualizes the ascent one would take through the mist cloud to reach the deck above.

Process

Stairs are made by bending a thin strip of sheet metal, alternating over 1.5cm and 2cm thick pieces of plywood.
Railings are bent and soldered to the top and bottom step.

Soap is boiled and poured into a rectangular mold with the staircase fixed in position. Soap hardens around the staircase and is removed from mold.
